Bitcoin Encounters Resistance at $80,000, Analyst Predicts Temporary Setback

Bitcoin, currently trading at $77,570.32, is experiencing a familiar pattern just shy of the $80,000 mark, hindered by sellers despite indications of potential breakout due to increased stablecoin liquidity, ETF demand, and a risk-on equity market. The cryptocurrency briefly surpassed $79,000 during Asian trading hours before retreating to trade below $78,000, resulting in a 0.4% loss over the past 24 hours. Ether has declined 0.6%, XRP is down 0.8%, and Solana's SOL has dropped over 1%. Broader market benchmarks, including the CoinDesk Memecoin Index and Smart Contract Platform Select Capped Index, have also fallen over 1% each. According to Alex Kuptsikevich, FxPro's chief market analyst, the $80,000 level is acting as a short-term barrier due to concentrated sell orders. Kuptsikevich notes that despite the pullback, the overall trend that began in late March remains intact. On-chain and ETF data support this view, with Binance recording a net inflow of roughly $3.4 billion in stablecoins this month. Institutional demand remains strong, with U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs attracting $2.44 billion in investor funds. However, security risks in decentralized finance continue to impact sentiment, with recent exploits resulting in significant losses. Traditional markets see WTI crude oil prices hovering above $90 per barrel, threatening global economic stability. The persistent risk of DeFi-related exploits underscores a structural vulnerability in the sector.
