Major Players Unite to Support Aave Users After Massive Cryptocurrency Hack

In the often-fragmented world of decentralized finance, crises tend to reveal underlying weaknesses. However, this recent incident has also brought to light a remarkable level of cooperation. Aave, a leading lending protocol in DeFi, has become the focal point of a comprehensive recovery effort following substantial losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, informally referred to as 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and created risk across lending positions on Aave, has prompted what appears to be one of the most coordinated industry responses to a DeFi incident. Aave Labs has proposed allocating up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery, with founder Stani Kulechov personally donating 5,000 ETH. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support, and other ecosystem participants, such as Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle, offering various forms of support. Circle Ventures is purchasing AAVE tokens, and entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have made significant deposits. The list of participants continues to grow, with some providing grants, deposits, or credit lines, highlighting the diverse approaches to balancing support with risk management. Aave Labs has also proposed a plan to release approximately 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support affected rsETH holders and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
