DeFi Leaders Unite to Support Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack, Pledging Hundreds of Millions
The recent Kelp DAO exploit has exposed weaknesses in the DeFi ecosystem, but it has also prompted an unprecedented level of coordination among industry leaders. Aave, one of the largest lending protocols in DeFi, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort, with capital and credit commitments pouring in from across the industry. Dubbed 'DeFi United,' this initiative has raised approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital pending governance approval. The exploit has created risk across lending positions on Aave, prompting a coordinated industry response. Aave Labs has outlined a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery, while other contributors, including Aave's founder Stani Kulechov, have pledged significant amounts of ETH. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys, Lido, and EtherFi among those providing financial support. The effort has also drawn smaller contributions from across the community, with entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures making deposits or purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, and Frax Finance also involved. Aave Labs has emphasized that these are long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys and Sharplink having been in close contact throughout. The breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi, with the Ethereum ecosystem coming together to support users and restore normal market conditions.
