Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

In a significant move to bridge the gap between tokenized and traditional equities, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized securities. This innovation enables investors to engage more deeply in corporate governance, a privilege typically reserved for those holding traditional stocks and ETFs in brokerage accounts. Through a collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now offers access to over 250 tokenized securities, allowing investors to review company filings and cast their votes via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. This integration is particularly noteworthy as it allows investors to log in using their crypto wallets, thereby accessing a suite of governance tools and documents that are usually accessible only through traditional brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting for tokenized equities marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the crypto sector, which has seen tremendous growth in recent times. With over $1.1 billion in value locked, the tokenized equities sector has more than tripled in size over the past year, according to data from RWA.xyz. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo Finance boasts an impressive portfolio of over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting to equity tokens is crucial as these offerings have historically lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, the new system empowers investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible and user-friendly," remarked Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, these assets offer the benefits of free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, combined with the governance rights associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems through this partnership. The firm's objective is to provide seamless support for both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows, thereby enhancing efficiency and user experience. "By providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance as traditional assets, we can significantly enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized world for end investors," noted Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge.
