Israel Introduces its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel

For the first time, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to a stablecoin pegged to the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to issue the token. BILS, the newly approved stablecoin, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY. The stablecoin market has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, reaching over $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated resilience, supported by a strong technology sector and effective macroeconomic management, gaining over 20% against the dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
