Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $77,029.33, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, thereby boosting the broader cryptocurrency market. This development comes on the heels of improved risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. This upward movement brings an end to the turbulent trading period between $65,000 and $75,000 that characterized March and early April, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically enter the market when they observe evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's breakout serves as a clear indication of this, potentially prompting more buyers to enter the market and further amplify the momentum. According to the first law of motion, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that, although originally intended for physical phenomena, holds relevance in financial markets as well. Analysts at Marex noted, 'The market had been confined to the $65 to $75 range for months. Breaking out of this range is significant because it alters market behavior. Sellers who had been comfortable selling rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy. Momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a solid foundation to build upon.' On-chain indicators also suggest a similar trend. For instance, data from CryptoQuant indicates that the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC. This points to continued investor accumulation, which could ultimately lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated on X, 'Bitcoin supply on exchanges continues to dwindle, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and liquidity becoming increasingly scarce. As a result, bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce – a decrease in supply typically translates to increased volatility.' However, QCP Capital is urging caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit. Puts are utilized as a hedge against potential price declines in the underlying asset. The firm added that current crypto trends appear to be closely tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. 'The path forward remains closely tied to oil prices and policy decisions. A decline in crude oil prices or clearer signaling from the Fed would support risk-taking. In the absence of these factors, markets are likely to remain in a state of uncertainty, pricing in uncertainty rather than resolution,' the Singapore-based firm noted in a market update. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are currently trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. In the broader market, security risks associated with DeFi continue to pose a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. Earlier today, the Sui-based Volo protocol was drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO incident that caused collateral damage across the sector. It is essential to remain vigilant. The chart illustrates bitcoin's daily price movements in candlestick format, with lines indicating the 100-day and 200-day average prices. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, represented by the white line. This is a pivotal development because the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, after which sellers re-established control, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has pierced through this threshold, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum. The focus now shifts to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
