US Imposes $344 Million USDT Freeze in Latest Move Against Iranian Regime
In its latest bid to disrupt Iran's financial networks, the US Treasury Department has frozen $344 million in cryptocurrency. This move is part of a broader initiative, dubbed 'Economic Fury', aimed at targeting the financial lifelines of the Iranian regime. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned several cryptocurrency wallets linked to Iran, resulting in the freeze. The US is determined to track and disrupt the flow of funds that Tehran is attempting to move outside the country. This effort follows Tether's decision to blacklist two blockchain addresses holding $344 million in USDT. A US official revealed that the sanctioned wallets have ties to the Iranian regime, including transactions with Iranian exchanges and connections to the Central Bank of Iran. The Iranian government has been increasingly relying on digital assets to circumvent restrictions and conceal cross-border transactions. In response, the US Treasury's OFAC is intensifying its crackdown on both traditional front companies and the use of digital assets. The agency is working closely with blockchain analytics firms and financial institutions to track illicit flows tied to sanctioned entities.
