The Long-Awaited Catalyst for Bitcoin Momentum Traders Has Arrived

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, bolstering the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward move was triggered by improved risk sentiment following US President Donald Trump's extension of the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, the cryptocurrency has finally broken out, providing momentum traders with the signal they have been anticipating. Momentum traders typically enter the market when they observe evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as a confirmation of this trend, potentially attracting more buyers and further amplifying the momentum. According to Newton's first law of motion, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that may also apply to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range between $65 and $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess their positions, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also suggest the same trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated on X that the supply of Bitcoin on exchanges continues to shrink, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and liquidity tightening. As a result, Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, which could lead to increased volatility. However, QCP Capital is advising caution, citing the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit. Puts are used as a hedge against potential price drops in the underlying asset. The firm added that crypto trends currently seem tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. Earlier today, the Sui-based Volo protocol was drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. The chart shows Bitcoin's daily price movements in candlestick format, with lines indicating the 100-day and 200-day average prices. BTC's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is pivotal because the 100-day average capped the bounce in January, following which sellers re-established control, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has pierced through, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
