Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat, 6.9 Million BTC at Risk
While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, ownership is at significant risk. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. The recent Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem. As the quantum threat looms, bitcoin developers have yet to propose a concrete solution, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. Several proposals have been put forth, but none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a central authority and governance process makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate a response to the quantum threat, highlighting the difficulty in migrating 6.9 million exposed coins to quantum-safe addresses.
