Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
In a significant move, Ondo Finance is bridging the gap between its tokenized equities and traditional ones by introducing proxy voting, thereby enhancing corporate governance participation for investors. Through its collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo now enables holders of over 250 tokenized securities to access company filings and cast their votes using Broadridge's ProxyVote system, bringing the benefits of traditional brokerage accounts to the blockchain. Investors can utilize their crypto wallets to log in and access a suite of governance tools and documents, mirroring the experience of traditional brokerage accounts. This development comes at a time when tokenized equities are experiencing rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, marking a three-fold increase over the past year, according to RWA.xyz data. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo boasts over $700 million in tokenized stocks and ETFs on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The introduction of proxy voting is crucial as it addresses a significant gap in governance rights for these offerings. Although Ondo's tokens are distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, the new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This innovation aligns with Ondo's mission to increase accessibility to traditional financial assets," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors benefit from the freedom of transferability and compatibility with DeFi, coupled with the governance associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is expanding its infrastructure to support blockchain systems with this move. The firm aims to create a unified workflow that accommodates both digital and conventional assets. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will significantly enhance the scalability of the tokenized world, fostering trust among end investors.
