New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Update
The developers of a newly introduced wallet claim to have devised a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without necessitating any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs recently unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a system that enables developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to augment Bitcoin's existing security measures. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's foundational layer. The launch of this wallet occurs amidst an ongoing debate regarding how Bitcoin should address the threat posed by quantum computing, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or a hard fork, while others argue that such measures are unnecessary. The Quip wallet's approach eliminates the need for a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, providing an immediate solution to the quantum risk.
