UK Courts Crypto Exchange Bybit in Bid to Replicate UAE's Innovative Spirit

In a move to replicate the success of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates in attracting cryptocurrency businesses, UK economic development officials have invited Bybit's leadership to London. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou revealed that the UK government is eager to attract large businesses, create jobs, and discuss upcoming pro-crypto legislation. Zhou's company, founded in 2018, relocated its headquarters to Dubai from Singapore in 2022 and is currently the second-largest crypto exchange, according to CoinGecko. The presence of crypto giants like Bybit and Binance in the UAE has drawn smaller crypto companies to the region, a phenomenon the UK hopes to emulate. Zhou noted that the UK has yet to build momentum in this area, unlike the UAE, where the arrival of major exchanges has created a ripple effect, attracting smaller players. Zhou's meetings with the Financial Conduct Authority and the House of Lords coincided with UK Fintech Week and the Treasury's plan to revamp payment systems using stablecoins and tokenization. The invitation to Bybit is seen as part of the UK's effort to push for innovation, particularly in the crypto sector, and to win back companies and investment that have flowed into the UAE. The timing of the invitation is notable, given the recent instability in the UAE due to the US-Israel war, which has prompted an exodus of residents and tourists, including British citizens.
