Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Prize for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology

The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin has become more tangible with the recent breakthrough by Giancarlo Lelli, who was awarded 1 bitcoin, valued at approximately $78,000, for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks the largest public demonstration of its kind, sparking concerns about the potential vulnerability of bitcoin and other major blockchains to quantum attacks. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underlies the security of crypto wallets, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can potentially exploit this, posing a threat to the security of these systems. Although Lelli's achievement is significant, it is essential to note that bitcoin's 256-bit elliptic curve security remains intact, and this breakthrough does not immediately compromise the network's security. The prize was designed to assess the progress of quantum attacks on real-world cryptography-based products, and Lelli's result demonstrates a substantial leap forward in this area. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result represents a 512-fold increase in just seven months. As the resource requirements for such attacks continue to decrease, the need for quantum-safe address types and post-quantum transition plans becomes increasingly pressing. Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including BIP-360, and other blockchain platforms, such as Ethereum and Ripple, have also published their plans for a post-quantum future.
