Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

The emergence of AI agents is transforming online payment landscapes, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview, Pollak noted that what seemed almost impossible just nine months ago has now become a reality, thanks to the rapid advancements in autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transaction capabilities has become increasingly evident. This has led to a growing interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing power, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed collaboratively by Coinbase, Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this shift. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API call or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly and at virtually no cost. Pollak reported that approximately $48 million in payment volume has been processed through x402 to date, with about 95% of these transactions occurring on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. The long-term goal, according to Pollak, is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. He envisions a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time, seamlessly. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. He described a scenario where top performers leverage agents to further enhance their performance, powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in improved marketing but in making crypto payments invisible and seamless.
