Bitcoin Momentum Traders Get the Green Light as Price Surges
The bitcoin price has broken through the $78,000 barrier, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This move follows an improvement in risk sentiment after US President Donald Trump extended the Iran ceasefire, with stock index futures also seeing gains. The cryptocurrency's upward trend has ended weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the long-awaited signal to enter the market. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, further fueling the momentum. Analysts at Marex note that the market spent months trading within the $65 to $75 range, and breaking out of this range changes investor behavior, causing sellers to reassess their strategies and momentum buyers to gain confidence. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, indicating continued investor accumulation and potential supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the high demand for bitcoin put options on Deribit, which could indicate a potential price drop. The firm also notes that crypto trends are currently influenced by oil prices and interest rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the increasing number of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The bitcoin price has established a strong foothold above the 100-day average, which is a significant development, as this average previously capped the price bounce in January. With the price now above this level, the focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
