Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Mitigate Quantum Threat

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be compromised by quantum computers, potentially allowing unauthorized access to funds. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those owned by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. A quantum attacker could exploit this vulnerability without needing to rush, as they can work through the wallets at their own pace. The recent Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem, as any bitcoin spent since its activation has published the key protecting the remaining balance at that address. To address this issue, various proposals have been put forth, including the introduction of new quantum-safe address types and the implementation of a detection system to trigger defensive actions in case of a quantum attack. However, these proposals lack broad support from bitcoin's core developers, and the network's governance culture, which emphasizes decentralization and resistance to coordinated change, may hinder the implementation of effective solutions. In contrast, Ethereum has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and has made significant progress in migrating to quantum-safe mathematics. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to take action and prevent a potential quantum threat, with the Google paper suggesting that the window to respond may already be closing.
