Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

Ondo Finance has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by introducing proxy voting for its token holders. This move enables investors to participate in corporate governance, a crucial aspect of traditional investing. The feature, developed in collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities on Ondo's platform to review company filings and submit their voting preferences through Broadridge's ProxyVote system. Investors can access these features using their crypto wallets, thereby gaining access to documents and governance tools typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting is particularly significant in the rapidly growing tokenized equities sector, which has seen its value triple over the past year to over $1.1 billion. As the largest issuer in this sector, with over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, Ondo's move is expected to have a profound impact. The addition of proxy voting addresses a significant gap in tokenized equities, which often lack basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens are separate from the underlying shares and do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting the shares it holds. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this development is a crucial step towards making traditional financial assets more accessible. It combines the benefits of being on a blockchain, such as free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, with the governance rights associated with the underlying assets. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The goal is to create a seamless experience for both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows. As Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, noted, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will significantly enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized world.
