Kelp DAO Suffers $292 Million Exploit
A recent exploit has drained approximately $292 million from Kelp DAO, a liquid restaking protocol, through its LayerZero-powered bridge. The attacker manipulated the cross-chain messaging layer, tricking it into releasing 116,500 rsETH to an attacker-controlled address. This incident highlights an evolving trend in North Korea-linked hacking attempts, which now target the fundamental assumptions of decentralized systems. The Kelp DAO hack has also affected Aave, with the attacker depositing stolen rsETH as collateral to borrow $190 million in ETH and related assets. Aave has since frozen rsETH markets and halted new borrowing against the asset. In related news, Coinbase has released a report on the risks of quantum computing, emphasizing the need for preparation against potential future threats to cryptography. The report concludes that while current blockchains remain secure, the industry must begin preparing for the possibility of a 'fault-tolerant quantum computer' capable of breaking widely used encryption.
