Tesla's Bitcoin Holdings Remain Steady, Despite $173 Million Digital Asset Loss
In the first quarter of 2026, Tesla's bitcoin holdings, valued at $76,272.67 per BTC, remained unchanged at 11,509 BTC. The company reported an after-tax impairment loss of $173 million on its digital assets in its quarterly earnings report. The decline in the value of its bitcoin stash was primarily due to the drop in bitcoin's price from around $90,000 at the start of the year to roughly $68,000 by the end of March. Tesla exceeded earnings expectations but fell short of revenue projections, with $22.39 billion in revenue and $0.41 earnings per share. The company's stock price rose by 4% in after-hours trading. Tesla first invested in bitcoin in February 2021, purchasing 43,200 BTC for approximately $1.5 billion. After selling a portion of its holdings, the company's bitcoin reserves fluctuated before stabilizing at 11,509 BTC in January 2025.
