Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter the Quantum Threat

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to protect wallets. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can potentially break this math, and recent research suggests that the required resources for such an attack may be lower than previously thought. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those owned by Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed and could be targeted by a quantum attacker. The 2021 Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem by publishing the keys protecting remaining bitcoin at spent addresses. Although some proposals, such as BIP-360, aim to introduce quantum-safe address types, they lack broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate a large-scale security upgrade, unlike Ethereum, which has a dedicated quantum-resistant program. The biggest challenge lies in making decisions that the network has historically avoided, such as freezing old address formats or allowing exposed coins to migrate to new quantum-safe addresses. With the potential timeline for a quantum attack shortening, the question remains whether bitcoin can coordinate a significant security upgrade before it's too late.
