Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents as the Future of Cryptocurrency Payments

According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the rapid growth of AI agents is revolutionizing online transactions, with cryptocurrency infrastructure playing a crucial role. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that advancements in autonomous AI systems have made previously impossible tasks feasible. As AI agents evolve, they require seamless and native transaction capabilities. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this stack. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without traditional billing systems or subscriptions. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make instant, low-cost global transactions using a single API or smart contract call. Pollak reported that approximately $48 million in payment volume has been processed through x402, with around 95% of transactions occurring on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services. The long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without human intervention. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are emerging, Pollak believes the near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. Top performers are already using agents to enhance their performance, with workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For cryptocurrency, the main challenge remains adoption, which Pollak argues can be addressed through invisibility rather than improved marketing.
