Time's Running Out for Crypto Clarity

As April draws to a close, the clock is ticking for the passage of the crypto market structure bill. Despite the challenges in predicting the bill's progress, it's clear that time is of the essence. The crypto industry is eagerly awaiting legislation that will cement its goals and regulations into law, making it more difficult for future administrations to undo these rules. Without the Clarity Act, the industry may find itself having the same conversation in a few years. Memorial Day, just a month away, is seen as a deadline for legislation to advance if it's to have a chance at passage before the election. Lawmakers will soon be leaving town to focus on their campaigns, leaving little time for the crypto bill. Before Congress departs, it will need to address funding for the Department of Homeland Security and consider Kevin Warsh's potential appointment as the next Fed chair. The crypto industry is pushing for the bill, with over 100 companies signing an open letter urging a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee. However, it's unclear how close the committee is to moving forward, with outstanding issues such as stablecoin yield and decentralized finance still unresolved. Even when these issues are resolved, the House will need to vote again on the bill. Congressman French Hill believes that many of the outstanding issues have already been addressed by the House in its version of the bill, making it easier for the Senate to find common ground. The topic will be discussed further at Consensus Miami next month.
