Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork

The developers of a new wallet claim to have discovered a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing using a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. On Tuesday, Postquant Labs unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which runs on Arch Network, a system enabling developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. The Quip wallet utilizes this infrastructure to implement a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, enhancing Bitcoin's existing security without relying on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's base layer. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, but with Quip's approach, we can provide similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip occurs amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp's proposal, BIP-361, suggests phasing out quantum-vulnerable addresses and freezing non-compliant coins, while Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork proposal involves creating a new chain with a quantum-resistant sidechain. Both proposals have faced opposition from the community. Quip's approach argues that neither a soft fork nor a consensus change is necessary, offering an alternative solution that requires no community vote. However, the approach has its technical trade-offs, with Lopp arguing that Layer 2 protection is insufficient due to the potential for public key leakage. Quip's wallet app is set to launch soon, and a third-party audit is currently underway. The project's CTO, Dr. Richard Carback, claims that their approach reduces the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, approximately 20 minutes.
