Imminent Quantum Computing Threat to Crypto: Experts Urge Preparation
A newly released report, commissioned by Coinbase, highlights the pressing need for the crypto industry to prepare for the potential threat of quantum computing to its security. Although the report's authors, including renowned cryptographers and academics, assert that today's blockchains are secure, they emphasize that the advent of a fault-tolerant quantum computer could compromise widely used encryption methods. This has prompted major crypto ecosystems, such as the Ethereum Foundation, to propose quantum-resistant digital signatures and experiment with secure wallet designs. The report cautions against complacency, stressing that while current quantum machines are not yet powerful enough to crack cryptography, the development of a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer is inevitable. Estimates suggest that such a computer could be built within a few years to a decade or more, with the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology recommending a transition to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035. However, this transition will not be straightforward, as quantum-resistant cryptography can significantly increase blockchain data costs and reduce throughput.
