Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents as the Future of Crypto Payments

The swift emergence of AI agents is revolutionizing online transactions, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, as stated by Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was deemed nearly impossible just nine months ago has become a reality, thanks to the rapid advancements in autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transaction capabilities has become apparent. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for various services. Pollak expressed his enthusiasm for x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase and collaborators like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which enables on-demand API payments without traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make global transactions instantly and at a minimal cost. According to Pollak, x402 has already facilitated approximately $48 million in payment volume, with the majority of transactions occurring on the Ethereum layer-2 network, Base. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically, without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. The key challenge for crypto remains adoption, which Pollak argues can be addressed by making the technology invisible to users.
