Hundreds of Millions Pledged in Rescue Effort for Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack

The decentralized finance world is witnessing an unusual level of coordination in response to a recent crisis. Aave, a leading lending protocol, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort following significant losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a highly coordinated industry response. Aave Labs, along with other key players, is at the core of this effort, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has also pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally, while other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are committing significant amounts of ETH. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. Other contributors, such as Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle, have also proposed significant allocations to support users and limit bad debt across DeFi. Compound has proposed giving up to 3,000 ETH to the fund, while entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have made or plan to make substantial deposits. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, Ink Foundation, and Tyro also involved. These contributions reflect long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys, Sharplink, and others maintaining close contact throughout. The approaches to support vary, with some offering grants, others deposits, and several extending credit lines, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support affected rsETH holders and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
