US Regulator to Leverage AI for Crypto Registration Reviews
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its proactive stance on digital assets, is now embracing artificial intelligence to compensate for its reduced workforce. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is working on implementing AI and automation to review registration applications, monitor trading data, and enhance market surveillance. This move comes after the agency reduced its staff by over a fifth. The CFTC is developing systems to automate the manual submission of documents, with AI tools designed to review applications, flag issues, and provide feedback to staff. The agency is also utilizing Microsoft's Copilot and building in-house tools for reviewing swap data and market surveillance. Under Selig's leadership, the CFTC has been actively involved in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the establishment of a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The agency has also taken a firm stance on prediction markets, asserting its exclusive jurisdiction and taking action against bad actors. With AI set to play a significant role in the CFTC's regulatory efforts, the agency is poised to enhance its capabilities and provide greater oversight of the crypto sector.
