The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware, earning a 1 bitcoin bounty. This achievement, made by Giancarlo Lelli, is a significant step forward in the field of quantum computing and has implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. The bounty, worth approximately $78,000, was awarded by quantum security startup Project Eleven. While this breakthrough does not immediately compromise the security of Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it does demonstrate the rapid progress being made in quantum computing and highlights the need for the development of quantum-safe address types. In fact, estimates suggest that roughly 6.9 million bitcoin are potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks, as their public keys are already visible on-chain.
