Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The swift emergence of AI agents is transforming online payment systems, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a crucial role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was nearly impossible just nine months ago has become entirely feasible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. "Agents, being defined in software and operating on software, require money in the form of software," Pollak explained, emphasizing the importance of AI systems being able to transact autonomously. This shift has sparked interest in "agentic payments," enabling AI systems to pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings independently. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed collaboratively by Coinbase, Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this new payment landscape. The x402 protocol facilitates on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute a single API call or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly, and at minimal cost. Early adoption is already evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through x402 to date, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. "The goal is for agents to be able to operate freely," he stated, describing a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time seamlessly. While fully autonomous "zero-human" businesses are starting to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. "Top performers are now leveraging agents to further enhance their performance," he said, illustrating workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the broader challenge remains adoption. According to Pollak, the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto invisible to the user. "It will be much easier to promote crypto when people don't need to be told about it; they simply experience it," he said.
