Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Shekel-Pegged Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to a stablecoin tied to the value of the shekel, marking a significant milestone in the country's adoption of digital currencies. Following a two-year assessment and pilot program, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This development is the result of collaboration between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, reaching a valuation of over $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to their financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed market currencies, bolstered by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar, making it the top-performing currency among nations with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
