Israel Introduces First Regulated Stablecoin: The Digital Shekel

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the shekel. This approval follows a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, culminating in Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold being authorized to issue the token. BILS, the stablecoin in question, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with the added assurance of auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced exponential growth over the last 18 months, reaching a valuation of over $300 billion, driven largely by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the United States. However, the dominance of U.S. dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in other markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty, should on-chain payments universally adopt the dollar as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel stands out as one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets, bolstered by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Notably, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar over the past year, as per Visual Capitalist, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel into the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
