Bitcoin Surpasses Critical Threshold as Investors Await Warsh Hearing
Bitcoin is currently trading at $76,163.85, maintaining a positive trajectory above the crucial $75,000 level that CoinDesk has identified as essential for bulls to retain control. However, market observers are advising caution, emphasizing the need for prices to remain above this threshold through Wednesday, when the US-Iran ceasefire is scheduled to expire. Analysts at Marex have noted that the market must consider two possible scenarios: the extension and de-escalation of the conflict, or renewed escalation and increased oil prices. This uncertainty may lead to sudden market fluctuations, despite bitcoin's current strength. An escalation of the conflict could drive oil prices above the March high of $119, potentially causing a downturn in Asian and global equity markets. It remains to be seen whether bitcoin will continue to demonstrate resilience, as it did during the March conflict when it stabilized around $70,000. As of the latest update, no Iranian delegation has departed for the talks in Pakistan, and President Donald Trump has warned of a significant escalation if the ceasefire ends without a deal. Another key event on the horizon is the nomination hearing for Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, scheduled for Tuesday. Warsh is known for his 'inflation hawk' stance, having opposed interest-rate cuts and quantitative easing following the 2008 financial crisis. His comments during the hearing may have a significant impact on the market, particularly if they reinforce expectations of policy easing. In the broader market, major cryptocurrencies such as ether, solana, and XRP have seen modest gains of less than 2% over the past 24 hours, underperforming bitcoin. Smaller tokens, including XLM and TON, have experienced more substantial growth, with increases of over 5% each. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index has risen by more than 3%. Notably, the DeFi Select Index has added 2%, despite the industry-wide fallout from the weekend hack of KelpDAO, which resulted in the attacker draining rsETH, a widely used liquid restaking token. Decentralized lender Aave has been significantly affected, with the total value of crypto assets locked on its platform falling to $16 billion, a decline of nearly $10 billion since before the hack. Aave's native token, AAVE, has declined by 18% to $93 since the hack, while open interest in futures tied to the token has reached a record high of 3.59 million tokens, indicating potential for increased volatility ahead.
