This achievement, made possible by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli, has earned him a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000. The breakthrough is significant, as it demonstrates the rapidly advancing capabilities of quantum computers in compromising the security of cryptographic systems. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of most cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its corresponding public key. However, quantum computers, utilizing Shor's algorithm, pose a substantial threat to this security paradigm. Although the broken key is relatively small, with a search space of only 32,767 possibilities, the achievement marks a substantial leap forward in quantum attacks, outpacing the previous record by a factor of 512. The implications of this breakthrough are far-reaching, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, roughly one-third of the total supply, potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain.
