Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat
While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be compromised by quantum computers, potentially allowing attackers to drain approximately 6.9 million BTC, including those held by Satoshi Nakamoto. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can significantly reduce the time it takes to break this math, and recent research suggests this could be achieved with fewer resources than previously thought. The exposed pool of bitcoin is substantial, including early coins and those that have been spent from, making them susceptible to quantum attacks. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently expanded this problem by publishing keys for remaining bitcoin in spent addresses. Although there are proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, neither has gained broad support from core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority in bitcoin makes coordinating a solution challenging, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. The question remains whether bitcoin can implement effective solutions before the threat becomes too great, with the industry watching to see if it can overcome its structural hurdles to protect its network.
