Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the new token. Dubbed BILS, the stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. The development of BILS marks a significant milestone in the growth of the stablecoin sector, which has expanded to over $300 billion in the past 18 months, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as one of the strongest performing fiat currencies among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it will join other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
