Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork

The developers of a new wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without requiring any modifications to the network itself. The Postquant Labs project unveiled its post-quantum bitcoin wallet, Quip, which operates on the Arch Network, a system that enables developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. Quip employs a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, which is a tested cryptographic technique that does not rely on elliptic curve math, making it resistant to quantum computer attacks. By leveraging a 'Layer 2' network, developers can add features to Bitcoin without altering its base layer. The launch of Quip comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals, such as Jameson Lopp's BIP-361 and Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork, drawing criticism from the community. Quip's approach offers an alternative solution that does not require a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, providing similar protection immediately.
