Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Digital Shekel

In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, a leading crypto custodian, with auditing oversight provided by EY. The stablecoin market, which has grown exponentially over the past 18 months to over $300 billion, is dominated by US dollar-pegged tokens, raising concerns about financial sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel, which has performed strongly against the dollar, gaining over 20% in the past year, is now set to join other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, in the blockchain-based financial ecosystem. According to Bits of Gold, the introduction of the shekel onchain will position it alongside these currencies, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
