US Crypto Regulatory Body to Utilize AI in Application Review Process
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its openness to digital assets, is now embracing artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. According to Chairman Mike Selig, the agency is developing new technologies to streamline its processes, including the use of AI to review registration applications and monitor trading data. The current manual submission process for registrations is being overhauled to incorporate automation, making it more efficient. AI tools will be used to review applications, flag issues for staff, and reject incomplete or erroneous submissions. The CFTC is also utilizing in-house tools for market surveillance and swap data review, with staff currently being trained on Microsoft's Copilot. Under Selig's leadership, the agency has made significant strides in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a taxonomy for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The CFTC is committed to policing fraud and manipulation in crypto markets and is taking a firm stance on its exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets, with several states challenging this stance. The agency is actively enforcing its regulations, with a recent case involving a US Army soldier accused of insider trading in prediction markets. Selig emphasized the CFTC's dedication to taking action against bad actors and its serious approach to enforcement.
