Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat, 6.9 Million BTC at Risk
While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin mining, which relies on hashing, is secure against quantum threats, ensuring the blockchain's continuity. However, the math protecting bitcoin wallets can be broken by quantum computers, potentially allowing unauthorized access to funds. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. The recent Taproot upgrade inadvertently increased the vulnerability by publishing keys for spent bitcoins. Although there are proposals like BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, a unified strategy to address the quantum threat is lacking in the bitcoin community, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. The challenge for bitcoin lies in its governance structure, which resists centralized authority and coordinated changes, making the implementation of effective solutions difficult. The clock is ticking, and the window for a response may close sooner than anticipated, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to secure the network against quantum threats.
