Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and Big Four consultancy firm EY, which provided auditing oversight. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has sparked concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated strong performance among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management, with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
