Time Runs Out for Clarity on Crypto Legislation
The crypto market bill has seen little progress over the past month, making its prognosis uncertain. As the clock ticks away, the likelihood of passage before the election dwindles. The bill aimed to establish a permanent regulatory framework for the crypto industry, making it harder for future administrations to undo. Without the Clarity Act, the industry may face similar uncertainties in the future. A drop-dead date of Memorial Day, May 25, has been set for legislation to advance, after which lawmakers will be preoccupied with their campaigns. The crypto industry is eager for the bill's passage, with over 100 companies signing an open letter urging a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee. However, unresolved issues, including stablecoin yield, continue to hinder progress. Even when these issues are resolved, the House will need to vote again on the bill. Congressman French Hill believes the Senate can find common ground, given the House's work on the issue. The future of the bill remains uncertain, with discussions set to continue at Consensus Miami next month.
