Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Digital Shekel
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the nation's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, now exceeds $300 billion in value. This surge can be attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. The introduction of the digital shekel is a strategic move, as the Israeli currency has demonstrated remarkable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year. According to Visual Capitalist, this makes it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By bringing the shekel into the blockchain ecosystem, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
