Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Network Alterations

The developers of a new wallet claim to have devised a method to counter quantum computing risks by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in tandem with Bitcoin, without necessitating any modifications to the network. Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which functions on Arch Network, a system enabling developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's security without relying on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of this wallet occurs amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while Quip's method requires no consensus change or community vote.
