Breakthrough in Quantum Computing: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Successful Attack
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as evidenced by the recent accomplishment of independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, by quantum security startup Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement demonstrates the largest public demonstration of a quantum attack on elliptic curve cryptography to date, with significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of cryptocurrency wallets, enabling them to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers utilizing Shor's algorithm can potentially compromise this security by deriving private keys from public ones. Although Lelli's breakthrough does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which employs 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum computing. The previous public demonstration, conducted by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025, involved a 6-bit key, and Lelli's achievement represents a 512-fold increase in just seven months. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with a recent Google Research paper indicating that the cost could be below 500,000 physical qubits. This development has significant implications for the cryptocurrency community, particularly for wallets with publicly visible keys, which could be vulnerable to quantum attacks.
