Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Assets

In a significant move, Ondo Finance is enhancing its tokenized equities to mirror traditional assets more closely, allowing investors to engage in corporate decision-making processes. A collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions has led to the integration of a proxy voting feature, enabling holders of over 250 tokenized securities on Ondo's platform to access company documents and cast their votes via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. Investors can now utilize their crypto wallets to log in and access tools typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts, including reviewing company filings and submitting voting preferences. This development comes at a time when tokenized equities are experiencing rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, representing a three-fold increase over the past year, according to RWA.xyz data. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo boasts more than $700 million in tokenized stocks and ETFs on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The introduction of proxy voting is crucial, as tokenized equities often lack fundamental governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, this new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This move aligns with Ondo's mission to increase accessibility to traditional financial assets," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors benefit from the free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, while also gaining the governance rights associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is expanding its infrastructure to support blockchain systems through this initiative. The firm's objective is to provide seamless support for both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will significantly enhance the scalability of the tokenized world, fostering trust among end investors.
