Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to launch the token. The BILS stablecoin was developed through a collaborative effort with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with esteemed consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. This development marks a significant milestone in the growing stablecoin sector, which has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion in value. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, with a 20% gain against the US dollar over the past year, making it the top-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
