Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to issue the token, known as BILS. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, with its size surpassing $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated strength among developed market currencies, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Having gained over 20% against the dollar in the last year, the shekel has emerged as the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
