Experts Warn of Looming Quantum Computing Threat to Cryptocurrency, Emphasize Need for Preparation
A commissioned report by Coinbase's advisory board, comprising renowned cryptographers and academics, underscores the imperative of addressing the quantum computing threat to cryptocurrency. Although the current blockchain infrastructure remains secure, the advent of a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of breaking standard encryption is deemed increasingly plausible. Consequently, the industry is urged to initiate preparations without delay. The report notes that major crypto ecosystems, such as the Ethereum Foundation, are already exploring quantum-resistant solutions, including novel digital signatures and wallet designs. While the timeline for the emergence of a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer is uncertain, estimates suggest it could be achieved within a few years to a decade or more. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology recommends transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035. However, the report cautions that waiting for an urgent situation to arise is not advisable, as transitioning blockchains, wallets, and exchanges could take years to execute safely. The existence of quantum-resistant cryptography offers a solution, but its implementation is fraught with challenges, including significantly larger digital signatures, increased blockchain data costs, and reduced throughput. To address these concerns, the report proposes multiple transition strategies, including hybrid systems and gradual upgrades. Ultimately, the authors emphasize that the time to begin preparing for the quantum computing threat is now, to avoid potential disruptions to the cryptocurrency industry.
