The bitcoin price, currently at $76,707.42, has surpassed $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement coincided with improved risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's extension of the Iran ceasefire, as well as gains in stock index futures.
The cryptocurrency's ascent has ended the choppy trading period between $65,000 and $75,000 seen in March and early April, providing momentum traders with the green light they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's breakout serves as such a signal, potentially attracting more buyers and adding to the momentum. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been capped in the $65 to $75 range for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters behavior.
Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers waiting for confirmation have something to rely on. On-chain indicators also support this view, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant.
This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that bitcoin supply on exchanges continues to shrink, with fewer coins available to sell, more BTC moving to long-term holders, and liquidity tightening, making bitcoin increasingly scarce. However, QCP Capital urges caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and the interest-rate outlook.
In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The path forward remains tied to oil and policy, with a move lower in crude or clearer Fed signaling likely to support risk, while absent that, markets may remain in a holding pattern, pricing uncertainty rather than resolution.
