Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

The swift emergence of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was deemed nearly impossible just nine months ago has become entirely feasible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. Pollak emphasized that since agents are defined and operate through software, they require monetary transactions to be conducted in a similar manner. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for various services. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators such as Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this ecosystem. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make global transactions instantly and virtually free of charge. Early adoption has been promising, with roughly $48 million in payment volume having been processed through x402 to date. Pollak envisions a future where agents can seamlessly access a wide range of services programmatically, without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. While the long-term goal is to create an open marketplace for services, Pollak believes the near-term impact will come from individuals enhancing their capabilities with AI. The primary challenge for crypto remains widespread adoption, which Pollak argues can be achieved through invisibility, making it easier for people to experience crypto without needing to be explicitly aware of it.
